HEal Of Greater Buckeye

  • HEAL of greater Buckeye is a resident-led transforming neighborhood conditions to support healthier lifestyles. Through collaboration, leadership development, and accessible programs, HEAL works to ensure that healthy food, safe spaces, and active living opportunities are woven into everyday community life.

Established in 2010, HEAL continues to grow as a movement powered by neighbors, partners, and shared vision.

  • Our mission is to empower communities to make changes in their physical, mental, spiritual, and social environment to improve health and wellness.

  • A vibrant Greater Buckeye neighborhood, unified by the shared opportunity for every resident to achieve full-circle wellness—from healthy food and safe streets to meaningful social connections and a thriving local economy.

  • Safety

    • We prioritize the creation of physically, socially, and emotionally safe spaces where all residents can participate fully and authentically. Safety is foundational to health equity. By fostering environments free from judgment and barriers, we increase access to programming, strengthen engagement, and support long-term community well-being.

    Love

    • Our work is rooted in a deep commitment to the well-being of our neighbors. We believe that sustained health transformation begins with care, compassion, and mutual support. By nurturing physical, mental, and spiritual wellness, we cultivate resilience and strengthen the social fabric that allows communities to thrive.

    Trust

    • Trust is built through transparency, accountability, and responsiveness. We center community voice in our decision-making and align our programming with resident-identified priorities. By maintaining consistent communication and measurable follow-through, we ensure that our work reflects the needs and aspirations of the community we serve.

    Community

    • We believe community-driven change is the most sustainable form of change. By fostering collaboration among residents, local organizations, and partners, we strengthen networks of support, increase shared ownership, and build lasting infrastructure for wellness. Together, we create a unified vision that supports both present and future generations.

    Environment

    • Health outcomes are shaped by environment. We are committed to improving both the physical and social conditions of our neighborhoods by expanding access to healthy food, safe public spaces, and meaningful connection. Through intentional design and strategic partnerships, we help create environments where healthy choices are accessible, achievable, and sustainable.

Our Roots: A Neighborhood-Led Movement for Health

The Buckeye HEAL (Healthy Eating and Active Living) initiative started in 2010 because of a deep concern for our neighbors. At that time, research showed that people living in Buckeye-Woodhill and Woodland Hills were expected to live 15 years less than people in a suburb just eight miles away. We knew that where you live shouldn't determine how long you live, so the Saint Luke’s Foundation helped neighbors come together to start a movement that would put the power of change directly into the hands of the people who live here.

Over the last 15 years, HEAL has grown from a small project into a powerful, resident-led group. Today, we are led by local residents—who use their own life experiences to make our community a healthier, more connected place to live. We focus on making it easier for everyone to find fresh food, get moving, and feel supported by their neighbors.

Our work is all about "More Than One Way" to be healthy. Whether we are hosting "Food for All Fridays," leading a line dancing class, or planting a community garden, we are working to make sure every neighbor feels welcomed, respected, and inspired. We believe that by working together, we can close the health gap and make sure everyone in Buckeye, Woodland Hills, and Mt. Pleasant has the chance to thrive.
