HEal Of Greater Buckeye

Our Roots: A Neighborhood-Led Movement for Health

The Buckeye HEAL (Healthy Eating and Active Living) initiative started in 2010 because of a deep concern for our neighbors. At that time, research showed that people living in Buckeye-Woodhill and Woodland Hills were expected to live 15 years less than people in a suburb just eight miles away. We knew that where you live shouldn't determine how long you live, so the Saint Luke’s Foundation helped neighbors come together to start a movement that would put the power of change directly into the hands of the people who live here.

Over the last 15 years, HEAL has grown from a small project into a powerful, resident-led group. Today, we are led by local residents—who use their own life experiences to make our community a healthier, more connected place to live. We focus on making it easier for everyone to find fresh food, get moving, and feel supported by their neighbors.

Our work is all about "More Than One Way" to be healthy. Whether we are hosting "Food for All Fridays," leading a line dancing class, or planting a community garden, we are working to make sure every neighbor feels welcomed, respected, and inspired. We believe that by working together, we can close the health gap and make sure everyone in Buckeye, Woodland Hills, and Mt. Pleasant has the chance to thrive.
